In 1976 Floyd Rose invented the locking vibrato tailpiece/bridge.It gained popularity in the 1980's by its use by popular rock guitarists, who used its ability to stay in tune even with extreme changes of pitch. It uses a double-locking design the was revolutionary at the time and has been listed as one of the "Top 10 Most Earth Shaking Guitar Innovations".
