One of the first Luthier Tools I built as I started instrument building was an early version of this Unheated Side Bender. The side were boiled in a fabricated vat sized for the sides over a small 2-burner gas tabletop stove. It served its purpose and the sides turned out remarkably well. As time progressed I gravitated to the heated version of the bender primarily because of the wide range of shapes available to me.
For those of you who only want to build a shape or two in your guitar building, this plan would serve you well. Refinements from my original design are spring end retainers and a better waist retainer mechanism, which would have saved me hours of frustration with my original setup.
This plan details all the wood parts you will need for this bender. As the guitar shape layouts for each guitar shape are now included with each Master Guitar Plan, they are no longer included with this tool.
Note: As ALL of our plans are sold as digital downloads, when you complete your plan purchase with us, you will automatically be given a download link to access the plans.
This bender is designed to bend only one shape. For multiple shapes you will need to make additional benders
Benders are easy to make with few parts, so multiple benders can be make in several hours.
All parts are shown as full size templates on the plans. Guitar shapes are supplied with each guitar master plan.
Sheet 1: Half Size drawings showing complete detail of side, top and the end, of the tool, including all the detailed notes, dimensions and materials you will need to build this jig very accurately and quickly.
