Gibson started producing the ES-335 in 1958 and it was known as the Thinline. They made several solid body electric guitars prior to this but the solid body lacked the darker, warmer tone that was produced by unamplified hollow body guitars.
In seeking a middle ground between the solid body electrics and hollow body guitars, the ES-355 wa developed. This semi-hollow body guitar met these requirements and is used for a wide range of music including, blues, jazz and rock. The guitar has been extremely popular and in continuous production since 1958.
