Solid Body Electric Guitar Plan #18

  • General Information

Gibson introduced the Firebird line of guitars in 1963. There were four models available with different pickup and tailpiece configurations. Previously they used designations like "Junior", "Special", "Standard" and "Custom" to distinguish these different models, but on the Firebird line they used Roman numerals I, II, III and IV.

The Firebird was introduced to compete with Fender's solid body guitars. Unique features of the Firebird include: Reversed headpiece, reversed pickguard and offset treble and bass horns.

Ray Dietrich, who was a car designer, was hired by Gibson to design a guitar that would have contemporary appeal for the floundering company's electric guitar line. Dietrich designed a guitar that took on the looks of mid-50's tail fins and borrowed the design of the Explorer and rounded the edges.

The Solid Body Electric Guitar Plan #18 faithfully replicates the look, sound and feel of this vintage guitar.
